Overview
Auth0 has been in production at enterprise scale since 2013, and its feature breadth reflects that history. When a Fortune 500 company requires SOC2 Type II certification, SAML 2.0 integration with their Okta deployment, SCIM provisioning for automatic user sync, custom domain email sending, and IP allowlisting — Auth0 has all of it. Clerk and Auth.js do not.
The Actions system — Auth0's successor to Rules — lets you inject custom logic at specific points in the authentication pipeline: before login, after user creation, after password reset. This is powerful for populating custom claims from an external database, triggering webhooks on user events, or enforcing custom business logic around who can log in.
The free tier supports 7,500 MAU, less than Clerk's 10,000 MAU. The jump to the B2B Enterprise plan for SAML SSO starts at $800/month, making Auth0 an unusual choice: best for enterprises needing the full feature set (and able to justify the cost), or very early-stage projects under the free tier limit. The middle market often finds Clerk better value.
Under Okta's ownership since 2021, the enterprise feature set has grown but the developer experience for smaller teams has sometimes suffered from an enterprise-oriented product roadmap.
